Ready to run your taxi business properly?

A taxi business in Nigeria can look easy from the outside. Buy a few cars, hire drivers, find passengers, and start taking trips.

The reality gets more complicated after that.

Your first major decision is the type of business you want to run. Do you want a small fleet of your own cars, or are you planning to build a ride-hailing operation similar to Bolt? That choice affects your startup cost, licences, booking process, driver management, and the technology you need.

How to start a taxi business in Nigeria

Nigeria has about 230 million people, while Lagos has roughly 22 million, according to one 2026 industry estimate. There is clearly a large market for transport. The harder part is making each car earn enough to cover its costs while keeping drivers, regulations, fuel, repairs, and bookings under control.

That is where many new operators run into trouble.

This guide breaks down the practical side of starting a taxi business in Nigeria in 2026. It covers the cost of cars, CAC registration, state-level requirements, driver management, fares, customer acquisition, and taxi dispatch software. Where published figures or sources disagree, the difference is pointed out instead of presenting one number as fact.

First, decide what kind of taxi business you're starting

Don't buy a car yet. Decide how you want the business to work first.

There are three common ways to start a taxi operation in Nigeria.

ModelWhat you doCapital neededRegulatory weight
Small owned fleetBuy or lease cars, hire drivers, and take bookings by phone or WhatsAppCars plus registrationLowest
Fleet with taxi dispatch softwareRun your own cars while software handles bookings, driver assignment, and trip recordsCars plus softwareLow to medium
Ride-hailing platformBuild or license an app and recruit drivers who own their carsApp cost plus licence feesHighest. Lagos can involve licence fees worth millions of naira

For someone starting for the first time, the second model often makes the most sense. You get better control over bookings, drivers, and trip records without taking on the cost of building a ride-hailing app from scratch.

Is a taxi business profitable in Nigeria?

A taxi business can make money in Nigeria, but there is no reliable public figure that tells you exactly how much one car will earn each month. Any article that gives you one fixed income figure without showing where it came from deserves a second look.

The better approach is to run the numbers for your own city.

Monthly profit per car = (trips per day × average fare × days worked) − driver pay − fuel − servicing − insurance − licence and software costs

The lesson is simple: the number of paid trips each car completes matters enormously. Fixed costs such as insurance and software don't disappear when a car has a slow week, so lower utilisation can hit your profit much harder than you might expect.

How to write a taxi business plan in Nigeria that a lender will read

A taxi business plan does not need twenty pages of promises and big words. A lender wants to see the numbers and, more importantly, whether those numbers still make sense when things don't go according to plan.

Keep the plan focused on the parts that matter:

  • Your service and the area you will cover
  • Number of cars you plan to operate and the cost of each one
  • Expected profit per car, including a slower or weaker scenario
  • Registration, licence, insurance, and other operating costs
  • A 12-month cash-flow forecast with money set aside for repairs
  • Your first ten potential customers, listed by name or customer type

The money can come from your savings, a business partner who provides a car, a bank, or a microfinance lender. The source of the money matters less than the numbers behind the plan.

If your proposal only shows what happens when every car stays busy and every month goes perfectly, a lender will notice. Real businesses have breakdowns, quiet periods, late payments, and unexpected bills. Leave room for those things in the plan.

The cost of starting a taxi business in Nigeria

The cars will take the biggest bite out of your startup budget. Prices vary quite a bit, though, so don't build your entire budget around one listing you found online.

Cost of starting a taxi business in Nigeria

Carloaded's April 2026 data puts the average Toyota Corolla listing at about ₦5.6 million. Another 2026 price guide puts Nigerian-used cars at roughly ₦4–5 million for a 2008 model, ₦6–7 million for a 2012 model, and ₦13–16 million for a 2020 model. Other sources list lower prices.

At the ₦5.6 million average, five cars would cost around ₦28 million. Treat that as a working example, not a guaranteed market price.

The car payment is only the beginning, though.

You also need to budget for registration and agent charges, e-hailing licence fees if your Lagos operation falls into that category, comprehensive insurance, driver checks, repairs, and booking software. Older cars can be especially tricky here. A vehicle may look affordable when you buy it, then ask for money almost immediately through tyres, servicing, or repairs.

Get written quotes before you commit. Prices can change based on the city, vehicle model, age, and condition.

CAC registration for a taxi business

Your taxi business needs a legal structure before you start operating. In Nigeria, registration goes through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) cac.gov.ng.

You generally have two options:

  • Business name: A practical choice for one owner or a small partnership. The 2026 fee guides cited in the source put official costs at roughly ₦11,000 to ₦21,000, including name reservation.
  • Private limited company: A better fit if you plan to bring in partners or handle larger corporate accounts. The cited guides put the official cost at around ₦28,000 to ₦48,500 for ₦1 million in share capital, including stamp duty.

An agent may charge another ₦15,000 to ₦50,000 on top of the official fees. Published figures vary, so check the current CAC portal before you make a payment.

A properly filed business name application usually takes around 3 to 7 working days. Mistakes in the application can mean another submission and more waiting.

For a small operation with two or three cars and one owner, a business name may be the simpler route. A limited company makes more sense if you expect partners or corporate business. After registration, get your tax identification number and keep up with annual returns.

Lagos, Abuja or elsewhere? Rules change by state

Taxi regulations aren't the same across Nigeria. The requirements that apply in Lagos may not apply in Abuja or another state, so check the rules for your actual operating area before you spend money on vehicles.

Lagos e-hailing licence requirements

Lagos introduced its 2020 Guidelines for Online Hailing Business Operation of Taxis with separate licence categories for different types of operators. The figures originally reported included the following:

Operator typeLicenceAnnual renewal
App operator, under 1,000 drivers₦10 million₦5 million
App operator, over 1,000 drivers₦25 million₦10 million
Owns cars and employs drivers, under 50₦5 millionNot stated
Owns cars and employs drivers, over 50₦10 millionNot stated

Those figures did not remain unchanged. After criticism from the industry, Lagos reduced the licence and renewal fees by 20% and replaced the proposed 10% trip charge with a ₦20 per-trip charge for a road improvement fund.

Operators also have insurance obligations, must provide the ministry with access to trip data, and drivers need a valid driver's licence and LASRRA card.

Lagos later amended its regulations in 2023. That matters because old fee figures can easily get repeated online long after the rules have changed. Check the latest Ministry of Transportation requirements before you apply or commit money to a fleet.

How to start a taxi business in Lagos (the local checklist)

Once you know which rules apply to your business model, the process becomes much more straightforward. For a small taxi operation in Lagos, the basic checklist is:

  1. Register the business with CAC.
  2. Contact the Lagos Ministry of Transportation and confirm which category your business falls under and whether you need an operator licence.
  3. Register your drivers with LASRRA and check that their licences are valid.
  4. Get comprehensive insurance for every vehicle.
  5. Keep trip records, licences, insurance documents, and other certificates together. You don't want to be searching through WhatsApp messages when an official asks for them.

Abuja and other states

Lagos gets most of the attention, but it isn't the only place where local rules matter.

Industry guides say taxi operators in Abuja need approval from the Department of Road Traffic Services in addition to CAC registration. Other states have their own permits, fees, and transport requirements.

The safest move is to contact the relevant state transport authority before buying your cars. Finding out about an extra permit after you have already spent millions of naira is a bad time to discover it.

The airport problem

In 2026, FAAN suspended e-hailing platforms at Lagos airport. Legit.ng reported one traveller paying ₦30,000 to Ikeja against ₦6,000 on inDrive. FAAN denies an outright ban and says it is enforcing its Airport Car Hire and Ride Management System and said this was not intended as a blanket ban, and reports later said Bolt resumed after an operational agreement. Get FAAN's requirements in writing before you promise airport pickups to any customer.

How you'll take bookings: phone, WhatsApp, an app, or taxi dispatch software in Nigeria

Why the spreadsheet stops working

Phone and WhatsApp work for two or three cars. Beyond that, calls get missed, drivers cruise empty, and fares get argued after the trip.

What taxi dispatch software does that WhatsApp can't

Taxi dispatch system typically assign the nearest available driver, track cars on a live map, calculate fares before the trip and record every trip. That record supports the Lagos data requirements and gives you the utilisation figure from the profit example. You can't improve a number you don't measure.

What to check before you pay for one

  • Runs on inexpensive Android phones and weak mobile data
  • Handles cash trips as well as card payments
  • Prices per vehicle or monthly subscription, without a long contract
  • Lets you export trip and driver records
  • Offers support in your time zone
  • Lets you set your own fare rules instead of forcing one price list

ZervX is a taxi dispatch platform built for operators who want that control without building their own app. See how dispatch would work for your fleet.

How to set fares that cover your costs

Work out your cost per kilometre before you copy anyone's price list:

Cost per km = (monthly fuel + servicing + driver pay + insurance + licences + software) ÷ kilometres driven in a month

Divide by the share of kilometres that carry a paying passenger, because empty kilometres still cost you, then add your margin. If a competitor's fare is below your cost per paying kilometre, don't match it. Compete on reliability, safety and pre-booking instead.

How to get your first customers

Your first customers don't have to come from random street traffic. Look for businesses and people who need rides they can plan ahead.

How to get your first customers

Hotels, offices, event companies, schools, and airport transfer customers are good places to start. Corporate accounts can be especially useful because a business may send you repeat bookings instead of a single ride and then nothing for weeks.

Set up a Google Business Profile with your phone number and service area. When customers are happy with the service, ask them to leave a review. A few genuine reviews can make a new taxi business look a lot more credible to someone searching for a local ride.

Ready to run your taxi business properly?

A taxi business in Nigeria is less about having a lot of cars and more about keeping control of the numbers.

Start with the right business structure. Check the rules that apply to your state. Know what each car costs you every month, keep a close eye on paid trips, and don't let driver or vehicle records become an afterthought.

The demand may be there, but demand alone doesn't make a taxi business profitable. The cars have to stay productive, the costs have to make sense, and every trip needs to count.

Once those pieces are in place, the next step is finding a system that can handle bookings, drivers, and trip records without forcing you to build everything yourself.
